The studios of donghua

The small Chengdu studio turned giant

Founded in Chengdu in 2015 and led by Jiaozi, Coco Cartoon (可可豆动画) is the studio behind the two Ne Zha films, the all-time records of animated cinema.

History

The studio grew out of Jiaozi's personal workshop, Jiaokeli Animation Studio (饺克力动画工作室), where he made his short See Through. In 2015 it became Chengdu Coco Cartoon, with Jiaozi as main shareholder, holding 56%.

The studio formed a strategic partnership with Enlight and joined the Coloroom label. It embarked on a feature film about Nezha that took years of work.

Ne Zha (2019) passed 5 billion yuan. In 2025, Ne Zha 2 beat that score in just seven days and became the biggest hit in Chinese box-office history.

Signature

Coco Cartoon reflects Jiaozi's personality: popular humour, endearing characters and outsized technical ambition. For its films, the studio coordinates dozens of other Chinese animation studios.
