Donghua in a few questions
What is donghua?
Donghua (动画) means Chinese animation. It covers 2D and 3D alike, from short series to sagas running hundreds of episodes, often adapted from novels published online.
How is it different from Japanese anime?
Beyond the country of origin, donghua makes far more room for 3D and draws mainly on Chinese web fiction: xianxia, wuxia, xuanhuan. Series often air weekly for years rather than in twelve-episode seasons.
Xianxia, wuxia, xuanhuan: how do they differ?
Wuxia features martial arts and chivalrous heroes in a fairly realistic ancient China. Xianxia adds spiritual cultivation and the quest for immortality. Xuanhuan freely mixes these codes with fantasy elements from elsewhere.
Where can I watch donghua legally?
The main platforms are Tencent Video (and its international version WeTV), iQIYI, Bilibili and Youku. Several series are also on Crunchyroll, Netflix or the studios' official YouTube channels. Each catalogue entry says where the series is available.
