Spare Me, Great Lord!

A high schooler who gets stronger every time he annoys someone

Synopsis

Spiritual energy has returned to Earth, and the modern world is discovering practitioners with supernatural powers. Lü Shu, a high schooler who lives alone with his little sister Lü Xiaoyu, walks away unhurt from a car accident and awakens in turn.

His gift is a strange one: a mysterious system rewards him every time he provokes negative emotions in others. The more he irritates, offends or enrages people, the more he earns to advance. With his sharp tongue, Lü Shu gradually becomes the dreaded "Great Demon King".

The series adapts the novel of the same name by Huishuohua de Zhouzi, published on Qidian. Animated by Big Firebird Culture for Tencent Video, it has three seasons, in 2021, 2023 and 2026, and a fourth has been announced.

World

The story takes place in present-day China, just as spiritual energy returns to the world. Ancient ruins open up, practitioners appear everywhere, and the state creates organisations to oversee them, such as the Tian Luo Di Wang, which Lü Shu eventually joins.

Power system

Practitioners advance by absorbing spiritual energy and following cultivation techniques. Lü Shu also has a system that converts the negative emotions he provokes into points, which he can exchange for resources and techniques.

Reception & popularity

The first season won viewers over with its humour and its cheeky hero, far from the serious protagonists of xianxia. The following, more polished seasons confirmed its success on Tencent Video, which has announced a fourth season.

My take

Spare Me, Great Lord! is a refreshing cultivation comedy: its hero advances by mocking others, and his lines are often hilarious. The modern setting, with its high schools and ruins opening in the middle of the city, is a change from the usual mountains and sects.

The first season's animation is uneven, and the humour won't suit everyone. But the series improves season after season, and the relationship between Lü Shu and his sister gives it heart.

Who is it for?Watch it if you like cheeky heroes, action comedies and stories of powers in the modern world, such as The Daily Life of the Immortal King.
