Synopsis
Adapted from Tang Jia San's bestselling novel, Soul Land (斗罗大陆, Douluo Dalu) follows Tang San, a disciple of the Tang Sect reincarnated on the Douluo Continent, a world where fighters tame ancestral spirits to forge their power.
Airing on Tencent Video since 2018, the series has become one of the most-watched donghua of all time, driven by its spectacular duel arenas, dense worldbuilding and its hero's rise through Shrek Academy.
Still in production after several seasons, Soul Land remains the most commonly cited entry point into large-scale Chinese animation — a fitting first stop for this hub.

World
The Douluo Continent is dominated by three rival powers — the Heaven Dou Empire, the Star Luo Empire and the Wuhun Empire — while academies such as Shrek train the most promising fighters. The plot moves forward as much through political tension between empires as through the heroes' individual rise in power.
Power system
Every inhabitant awakens a martial soul around age six — a weapon or spirit that defines their fighting style. By hunting ancestral spirit beasts, a fighter absorbs spirit rings — century-old, millennium-old, or rarer still — that unlock new abilities. The rank of Titled Douluo marks those who reach the highest tiers of power.

With more than 11 billion cumulative views on Tencent Video, Soul Land is officially the most-watched donghua in history, a record that cemented Tencent Penguin Pictures' position as the genre's leading xianxia studio and paved the way for its many spin-off adaptations.
My take
Soul Land opened the door to mainstream 3D donghua, and it shows: the early episodes have aged. But its martial soul system is one of the clearest in the genre, and the Tang San / Xiao Wu duo carries the story with real sincerity.
The series improves markedly over its hundreds of episodes, building up to genuinely spectacular final arcs. It is long and sometimes repetitive, but you can see why it remains so many fans' favourite way in.
Who is it for?Watch it if you want a long shōnen-style adventure with tournaments, academies and a gradual power climb.
