The Demon Hunter
A blade, a vendetta and humanity's counter-offensive against the demons
Synopsis
In the world of Cang Yuan, demons ravage the lands of men. While still a child, Meng Chuan sees his mother die at their hands and swears to exterminate them to the last.
From Mirror Lake Academy to humanity's highest institutions, he rises by the strength of his blade, punishes traitors, shatters demon armies and becomes one of the "god-demons" who protect the world.
Based on I Eat Tomatoes' novel, Shenman Culture's donghua has streamed on Youku since 22 June 2023. The third season, launched on 3 April 2026 as an annual series, opens humanity's final counter-offensive.
World
The world of Cang Yuan is besieged by the demon world, which opens rifts to invade human lands. Martial academies, prefectures and great mountain schools organise the resistance under the authority of Mount Yuanchu.
Power system
Fighters advance through mastery of martial arts and energy, up to the status of "god-demon", able to rival the greatest demons. Meng Chuan's blade holds a special place in it, between pure technique and willpower.
Reception & popularity
The first season scored 8.7 on Douban, and the second became the first Youku donghua to pass a popularity index of 9,000. The third season made the April 2026 top 10 of donghua.
My take
The Demon Hunter is a war story in the truest sense: a restrained hero, a clear threat and superbly choreographed blade fights. Its ink-painting-inspired art direction gives it a distinctive visual identity.
The hero sometimes lacks nuance and the pacing can feel mechanical. But for anyone looking for pure action and clear progression, it is one of the most effective series around.
Who is it for?Watch it if you enjoy revenge stories, blade fights and taciturn heroes.
