Swallowed Star
From a devastated Earth to the edge of space, the rise of a superhuman warrior
Synopsis
After spatial rifts suddenly appear and unleash monsters and disasters upon Earth, humanity must reinvent itself to survive. Luo Feng, an ordinary young man, trains to become a superhuman warrior capable of holding back these threats — a path that will take him far beyond the planet, to the edge of a hostile universe.
Adapted from I Eat Tomatoes' novel, Swallowed Star blends post-apocalyptic survival, futuristic martial arts and large-scale space science fiction, with stakes that keep escalating from Earth's ruins to cosmic battlefields.
Airing on Tencent Video since 2020, the series reached its fourth season in 2023 and is expanding into a movie format, confirming this sci-fi franchise's lasting popularity.
World
The story begins on an Earth ravaged by the opening of spatial rifts unleashing creatures and natural disasters, before expanding as humanity explores space and discovers other civilizations, allied or hostile, scattered across the galaxy.
Power system
Fighters' strength rests on a rank system (bronze, silver, gold warriors...) combining martial arts, futuristic technology and energy weapons, with progression that grows increasingly cosmic in scale across seasons.
Reception & popularity
Airing without interruption since 2020 across four seasons, the series has built a loyal enough audience to justify a movie-format expansion starting in 2026, a rare feat for a Chinese animated sci-fi franchise.
My take
Swallowed Star blends what donghua usually keeps apart: post-apocalyptic science fiction and martial arts. Watching warriors take on giant monsters in modern cities has real charm.
Luo Feng is a likeable lead, serious and loyal, and the series grows into an increasingly ambitious space saga. Some seasons are more uneven than others, but the whole remains very watchable.
Who is it for?Watch it if you want muscular sci-fi rather than sects and sacred mountains.
