Stellar Transformations

A prince who cannot cultivate sets out to conquer the stars

Synopsis

Qin Yu is the third son of Qin De, a powerful prince seeking revenge for his wife's death. But Qin Yu was born with a defect that prevents him from practising the inner arts. To help his father, he throws himself into the outer arts, hardening his body.

The day he finds a mysterious meteor tear, everything changes. It speeds up his progress and sets him on the path of Stellar Transformation, a unique cultivation technique. Qin Yu then leaves the mortal world for the realms of immortals, demons and gods.

The series adapts I Eat Tomatoes' novel, published on Qidian in 2007 and 2008. Produced by Foch Films for Tencent Video, it runs to seven seasons, from 2018 to 2026, or 120 episodes.

World

The story begins on the Qianlong continent, in the mortal world, where rival kingdoms wage war. It then rises to the realms of immortals, demons and fiends, and on to the divine realm, ruled by powerful emperors.

Power system

Stellar Transformation advances its practitioner through stages inspired by the cosmos: nebula, meteor, star core, planet, then star and beyond. Qin Yu's body, hardened by the outer arts, and the meteor tear set him apart from every other practitioner.

Reception & popularity

Stellar Transformations is one of the best-known novels in Chinese web literature, and the donghua was eagerly awaited. Its first seasons disappointed with their 3D, but the series improved and was carried through to the end in 2026.

My take

Stellar Transformations is a xianxia classic, with an endearing hero, a revenge story and then a cosmic ascent. The Stellar Transformation system, with its star-inspired stages, is original and easy to follow.

The 3D of the early seasons has aged, and the adaptation sometimes skips important parts of the novel. But the series has the merit of telling the whole story, which is still rare for a cultivation donghua.

Who is it for?Worth watching if you like classic xianxia, underdog heroes and complete stories, like Swallowed Star by the same author.
