百妖谱
Fairies Album
A spirit doctor, a little monk and a hundred yaoguai stories
Synopsis
In ancient China, Tao Yao is no ordinary doctor: she treats spirits and yaoguai. Accompanied by the little monk Mo Ya, she travels from village to town to cure the strangest ailments.
Over the episodes, the fox Gungun and the snake Liu Gongzi join the little troupe. Each case is a standalone story, often tender, sometimes cruel, that questions the boundary between humans and spirits.
Based on Suoluo Shuangshu's novel, the 2D donghua has streamed on Bilibili since 25 April 2020. Animated by Haoliners and then CMC Media, it has five seasons, including Jingshi Pian (2022), Sifu Pian (2024) and Luoyang Pian (2025).
World
The world draws on Chinese collections of supernatural tales (志怪): spirits born of animals, plants or objects live among humans, hidden or tolerated. The stories take place in villages, markets and, later, capitals such as Luoyang.
Power system
No spectacular cultivation: the powers belong to folklore, from transformations and curses to supernatural remedies. What matters most is Tao Yao's medicine, which heals hearts as much as bodies.
Reception & popularity
Rated 9.4 on Bilibili, Fairies Album passed 230 million views with its first season alone. Its gentleness and its 2D aesthetic inspired by Chinese painting made it one of the best-loved "healing" donghua.
My take
Fairies Album is the perfect breather between two cultivation sagas: short stories, delicate 2D and a heroine as funny as she is touching. Some episodes really tug at the heart.
The episodic format may feel low-stakes to those looking for a big plot, and the studio change shows a little. But the quality of the writing stays remarkably consistent.
Who is it for?Watch it if you enjoy folk tales, short bittersweet stories and traditionally inspired 2D animation.
