The authors and creators of donghua

The storyteller of the yaoguai

Born in 1983, Tong Ling, known as Suoluo Shuangshu, is the author of Bai Yao Pu, adapted into a donghua as Fairies Album, and of the Fu Sheng Wu Yu series.

Career

A freelance writer, Suoluo Shuangshu made her name in the magazine Manke Xiaoshuohui (漫客·小说绘), where she became one of the flagship names.

She built her success with the Fu Sheng Wu Yu (浮生物语) series, melancholy fantastic tales, then with Bai Yao Pu (百妖谱), the story of Tao Yao, a doctor who only treats yaoguai.

Bai Yao Pu was adapted into a 2D donghua on Bilibili from 2020 as Fairies Album, and now has five seasons.

Life and behind the scenes

Based in Chengdu, she describes herself as a lover of food and fashion who likes to catch the beauty of everyday life while travelling and turn it into fantasy. A gourmet curiosity that shows in the settings and characters of her stories.

Style and themes

Suoluo Shuangshu writes short, romantic, bittersweet stories inspired by classical supernatural tales such as those of Pu Songling. Her prose is elegant and very visual, between the aesthetics of ancient China and a modern, anime-like touch.

Donghua Fan's take

Suoluo Shuangshu has a storyteller's gift: every yaoguai hides a touching story. Fairies Album owes a lot to that sensitivity, and it is one of the most delicate series in the catalogue.
