Sword of Coming

A talentless orphan, a collapsing small town and a sword to forge alone

Synopsis

In the small town of the Lizhu Cave Heaven, Chen Ping'an grows up alone and works at the porcelain kilns. Around him, children marked by destiny draw the attention of the continent's great powers, while he seems destined for nothing.

When the ancient sealed paradise shatters, the young man is caught up in the ambitions of sects, dynasties and sages. Guided by his principles more than by strength, he sets out on a road that will take him all the way to the Sword Qi Great Wall.

Based on Fenghuo Xi Zhuhou's novel, Yuntu Animation's donghua has streamed on Tencent Video since August 2024. Season two, launched on 25 December 2025, broke the platform's records.

World

Sword of Coming is set on a vast continent where Confucian, Taoist and Buddhist schools coexist with sword sects and human dynasties. The small town, a former sealed paradise, is the starting point of an immense geography that stretches to the Great Wall, where the border is held against demons.

Power system

Cultivation rests on highly codified foundations, including each person's "natal porcelain". The great doctrines, Confucianism first among them, grant power tied to their followers' moral conduct, giving the characters' choices a weight that is rare in the genre.

Reception & popularity

Season two gathered 8.91 million pre-registrations, a record for a donghua, and within eleven hours surpassed the popularity index of every Tencent animation of 2025, with a 9.8 rating from nearly 100,000 votes.

My take

Sword of Coming is probably the most ambitious donghua in terms of writing: few gratuitous fights, plenty of dialogue, and a hero who wins through integrity before winning through strength. Yuntu's polished visuals serve that atmosphere perfectly.

The slow pace of the opening can be disorienting, and the dense cast demands attention. But once you settle into the small town, you understand why season two broke every record.
