Ten thousand years after Tang San, a new generation rises to revive the Tang Sect
Synopsis
Ten thousand years have passed since Tang San's era. On the Douluo continent, martial souls now coexist with soul tools, machines powered by spiritual force, and the Tang Sect is a shadow of its former self.
Huo Yuhao, the despised illegitimate son of a duke, enters Shrek Academy with a martial soul deemed weak. Alongside a new generation of the Shrek Seven Monsters, he will try everything to bring the Tang Sect back to life.
Based on Tang Jia San Shao's novel, the donghua directed by Shen Leping at Xuanji Technology has streamed on Tencent Video since 24 June 2023, with one episode per week.
World
The Douluo continent has changed profoundly: rival empires, competing academies and a soul-tool industry have replaced the more artisanal world of Soul Land. Shrek Academy nonetheless remains the crucible of the greatest talents.
Power system
The system of martial souls and soul rings inherited from Soul Land is still there, but it now combines with soul tools (魂导器), whose mastery can make up for limited natural talent. Huo Yuhao builds his strength on that dual path.
Reception & popularity
From launch, the series ranked among Tencent Video's ten most-watched animations of 2023, with over 1.6 billion views. In early 2026 it was still among the top weekly audiences.
My take
Soul Land 2 is smart enough not to remake the original: soul tools modernise the world, and Huo Yuhao, a more fragile hero than Tang San, is endearing from the first episodes. Xuanji's 3D is clearly superior to the franchise's early days.
The weekly pace and the series' length demand patience, and some academy arcs repeat themselves. But for Soul Land fans, returning to Shrek Academy with a new generation is a real pleasure.
