The authors and creators of donghua
The melancholy poet of xianxiaBorn in Mudanjiang, in northeast China, Liu Yong, known as Er Gen, is the author of Renegade Immortal and one of the most respected names in xianxia.
Career
A graduate of Heilongjiang University's English department, Liu Yong took up online writing and made a big splash with Renegade Immortal (仙逆), the story of Wang Lin, an untalented boy who defies fate.
He followed with Pursuit of the Truth (求魔), I Shall Seal the Heavens (我欲封天), A Will Eternal (一念永恒), San Cun Ren Jian (三寸人间) and Beyond the Timescape (光阴之外). His novels are among the most followed on Qidian, where he is a "platinum" author.
Recognised by the literary establishment, he was elected to the national committee of the China Writers Association for its 9th and 10th terms.
Style and themes
Er Gen blends xianxia's power climb with real melancholy: the cultivator's loneliness, the passing of time, lost love. His novels are linked by nods and recurring characters, to the point that readers speak of a shared universe. A Will Eternal also shows a real comic gift.
