The authors and creators of donghua
Qidian's "god of plot holes"A Beijinger and engineer by training, Yang Zhendong, known as Chen Dong, is the architect of a vast Chinese fantasy universe linking Shrouding the Heavens, Perfect World and Sacred Ruins.
Career
A graduate of the China University of Petroleum, Chen Dong began with Immortal and Undying (不死不灭), before finding fame with its sequel, Tomb of the Gods (神墓), which long dominated the Qidian and Baidu charts.
Then came Chang Sheng Jie (长生界), followed by the trilogy that made him a legend: Shrouding the Heavens (遮天), Perfect World (完美世界) and Sacred Ruins (圣墟). These novels echo each other: Perfect World is set in the distant past of the Shrouding the Heavens universe.
In the first big vote for the "kings of web fiction", he was ranked among the "five Supremes" and "twelve principal gods" of online literature. He is a member of the China Writers Association and went on to write Shen Kong Bi An (深空彼岸).
Style and themes
Chen Dong writes cosmic sagas: heroes who grow from a village to the edges of the universe, ancient mysteries, titanic battles. His nickname "god of plot holes" (坑神) comes from his taste for riddles he plants and does not always solve, which drives his readers mad and keeps them loyal.

Donghua Fan's take
Chen Dong is the master of vertigo: no one else gives such a sense of an infinite universe. His novels frustrate as much as they fascinate, but Shrouding the Heavens and Perfect World are genre essentials.
