Wu Geng Ji

The son of a defeated king swears to overthrow the gods

Synopsis

In this world, the gods rule over humans, who have been reduced to slaves. King Zhou of the Shang dynasty dares to defy Tian, master of the gods, and publicly burns his oracle. Despite a power wrested from the immortal phoenix, he is defeated.

His son, Wu Geng, escapes death thanks to his mother, Daji: his soul is reborn in the body of A Gou, a young slave he had once injured. Enslaved in turn in the mines of the Zhou dynasty, alongside Bai Cai, A Gou's fiancée, he discovers the injustice humans suffer and swears to overthrow the gods.

The series adapts the Hong Kong manhua Feng Shen Ji (封神纪) by Zheng Jianhe and Deng Zhihui. Produced by Sparkly Key, the studio behind Qin's Moon, with Tencent Video, it has four seasons aired from 2016 to 2023.

World

Wu Geng Ji reinvents Investiture of the Gods, the great novel about the end of the Shang. Here the gods are not heroes but tyrants, and King Zhou, usually portrayed as a despot, becomes the first human to rebel. Several peoples, such as humans, demons and the dead, unite against the gods.

Power system

The gods wield divine forces ranked by realms, and Tian holds the most powerful of all. Humans learn to fight through martial arts, powers stolen from the gods or the techniques of the dead, which Bai Cai masters.

Reception & popularity

Wu Geng Ji was one of Tencent Video's first big 3D series, at a time when 3D donghua was still in its infancy. Its spectacular fights and dark tone earned it a loyal audience over its four seasons.

My take

Wu Geng Ji has a strong premise: turning Investiture of the Gods around to make the gods the villains. The fights are impressive, especially in the later seasons, and the world is rich, with its many peoples and memorable warriors.

The early seasons have aged technically, and the story sometimes drags. But it is a classic of Chinese 3D animation that shows how far Sparkly Key has come.

Who is it for?Watch it if you like reimagined mythologies, epic battles and rebel heroes. A good companion to Ne Zha 2 and Jiang Ziya, which draw on the same legend.
