Wu Geng Ji — the Feng Shen Ji manhua by Zheng Jianhe

Wu Geng Ji is based on Feng Shen Ji (封神纪), a Hong Kong manhua written by Zheng Jianhe and drawn by Deng Zhihui. Published by Yi Ben Chuang Zuo (壹本創作) from 2010 to 2014, it has three parts and 182 chapters.

Origins and publication

Zheng Jianhe is a key figure of Hong Kong action manhua. With Deng Zhihui, he takes Investiture of the Gods, the novel about the fall of the Shang, and reverses its point of view: the gods become oppressors, and King Zhou a hero who defies heaven. The first part came out in 2010, and the third ended in 2014.

How it differs from the donghua

The manhua has the highly detailed art and brutal tone of Hong Kong manhua, with muscular bodies and bloody fights. Sparkly Key's donghua keeps the story but softens the violence and develops some characters and peoples further over four long seasons.

Reception and success

Feng Shen Ji was noticed in Hong Kong for its iconoclastic take on Chinese mythology. It was mainly thanks to the donghua that it reached a very wide audience in mainland China.

Trivia

  • The title Feng Shen Ji means "Chronicle of the Investiture of the Gods".
  • The third part is set five years after the second, while Bai Cai watches over A Gou's sleeping body.

My take

A very graphic action manhua for those who love the Hong Kong style and its powerfully drawn fights. It is harsher and darker than the donghua.

Who is it for?For fans of Hong Kong manhua and donghua fans curious about the original. There is no French translation.

— Spidermas, for Donghua Fan
