凸变英雄X
To Be Hero X
In this world, a hero is only as strong as the public's belief in them
Synopsis
In the world of To Be Hero X, public trust can be measured. Everyone sees their "trust value" displayed on their wrist, and anyone who gathers enough of it gains superpowers. The most popular heroes become real stars, ranked around the clock.
At the very top of the ranking sits X, the strongest hero in the world, a man in a suit whose identity nobody knows. The series follows several of the top ten heroes in turn, each with their own story, style and flaws, as a great tournament for the title of X draws near.
Created and directed by Li Haoling, the director of Link Click, the series is produced by Bilibili, BeDream and Aniplex. Its 24 episodes aired from 6 April to 14 September 2025, simultaneously in China and Japan.

World
The story takes place in a large modern city, under the gaze of cameras and social media. Heroes there are brands: they have sponsors, PR agencies and fans who make and unmake their power. A drop in popularity can literally make them weak.
Power system
Each hero's power depends on their trust value. Everyone has abilities tied to their image: Lucky Cyan's prodigious luck, Queen's intellect and gadgets, X's overwhelming strength. Losing the public's trust means losing your powers.
Reception & popularity
Aired simultaneously in China and Japan, with a prestigious Japanese voice cast and music by Hiroyuki Sawano, the series drew a lot of attention internationally. In China it was more divisive, with some viewers criticising a story split between its many heroes.
My take
To Be Hero X is a rare thing: a superhero series about fame, image and social media, with a real mystery at its core. Each arc changes style, and some episodes are among the most spectacular in recent animation.
The arc structure can be disorienting, and not all heroes are equally compelling. But its visual ambition and premise make it one of the most original series of recent years.
Who is it for?Watch it if you like My Hero Academia, One Punch Man or series that play with form. An ideal gateway into donghua for anime fans.
