The authors and creators of donghua
The choreographer of inkLin Jiaqi, known as Lin Hun, is the creator of Fog Hill of Five Elements, an ink-wash donghua whose fights went around the world. His is the story of a fan who sacrificed everything for independent animation.
Career
As a child, Lin Hun devoured comics, cartoons and kung fu films. In primary school he learned to draw by copying the characters on Water Margin trading cards. Two films, Fist of Legend (精武英雄) and Tsui Hark's The Blade (刀), deeply shaped the way he thinks about action.
At university he discovered the variety of animation and set himself a dream: to create an independent original work. After graduating he worked on a first project, Sui Cheng Li Xin (岁城璃心), in the evenings after work, then quit his job in 2014. The teaser, posted on Bilibili on 8 December 2014, passed a million views, but a rights dispute with the producing company led to the project's cancellation.
He bounced back by founding the Samsara studio (六道无鱼) on 11 November 2016. A five-minute short, Fog Hill of Five Elements, caused a sensation; the series was launched on 18 July 2017, and its first episode came out on 26 July 2020.
Life and behind the scenes
The cancellation of his first project, after years of work in his free time, could have stopped him. Instead he started again from scratch with a small team, keeping the same obsession: fights drawn by hand, frame by frame. In the meantime he also designed the fight scene in episode 12 of Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty (大理寺日志).
Style and themes
Lin Hun blends the aesthetics of Chinese ink painting with the rhythm of Hong Kong martial arts cinema. His exceptionally fluid fights are conceived as choreographies. Each episode takes years of work, which explains the small episode count.
