Sword of Coming — Fenghuo Xi Zhuhou's novel
At a glance1,218 chapters · completed

Sword of Coming adapts Jian Lai (剑来), Fenghuo Xi Zhuhou's (烽火戏诸侯) novel launched on the Zongheng platform on 1 June 2017. It follows Chen Ping'an, a poor orphan from a small, isolated town, who gradually becomes a swordsman, not through the strength of his talent but through the strength of his principles. The novel's official blurb sums up the tone in his own words: "My name is Chen Ping'an, Ping'an as in peace and safety. I am a swordsman."
Origins and publication
Fenghuo Xi Zhuhou is one of the most respected authors of Chinese online fiction, already known for Sword Snow Stride (雪中悍刀行), adapted into a drama in 2021. With Jian Lai he wrote a very literary novel, rich in philosophical digressions and references to Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. Chen Ping'an's journey is less a race for power than a reflection on what it means to be a good person in a cruel world.
The novel has been published by Zhejiang Literature and Art since April 2020, in an edition that runs to more than 50 volumes. The pen name Fenghuo Xi Zhuhou refers to a famous historical anecdote: King You of Zhou lighting the beacon fires to amuse his favourite, at the risk of losing his vassals' trust.

How it differs from the donghua
Yuntu Animation's donghua, launched in August 2024, adapts the small-town arc with remarkable care, in a style reminiscent of traditional painting. It keeps the novel's big themes but has to shorten the long dialogues and digressions that make it so rich. The novel also takes far more time to set up its gallery of characters, such as the teacher Qi Jingchun, Ning Yao and Cui Chan, whose motives unfold over hundreds of chapters.
Reception and success
Many Chinese readers consider Jian Lai one of the peaks of online fiction, and it regularly tops Zongheng's rankings. Its demanding style divides, though: some readers find it too preachy and slow, others see it as a true coming-of-age novel. The highly rated donghua brought it a new generation of readers.
Trivia
- The title Jian Lai means "the sword comes", a short, sober phrase that suits the hero.
- The donghua's first arc is subtitled Long Zhong Que (笼中雀), "the caged sparrow".
- Chen Ping'an starts the novel as a potter's apprentice, a humble trade that reflects his character.
- Fenghuo Xi Zhuhou also wrote Sword Snow Stride, adapted into a series starring Zhang Ruoyun in 2021.
My take
Jian Lai is a novel apart, which I recommend to anyone who wants more than fights. Chen Ping'an is one of the most endearing heroes in online fiction, and some chapters are truly beautiful. You have to accept the slowness, the long moral reflections and a sometimes sententious style. But once you settle into its rhythm, it is a memorable read.
Who is it for?Readers who love coming-of-age novels, philosophy and heroes guided by principles rather than strength.
