Soul Land 2 — the manhua

Like the first instalment, Soul Land 2 was adapted into a full-colour manhua long before the donghua. Serialized in Shen Man (神漫) magazine and made by a dedicated team, the "Jueshi Tangmen creative group", it has produced more than 36 collected volumes from Hunan Juvenile and Children's Publishing since June 2013.

Origins and publication

The manhua began just months after the novel, a sign of the publisher's confidence in the franchise. It covers Huo Yuhao's arrival at Shrek Academy, the formation of the new Seven Monsters and their first clashes. The style is close to the first Soul Land manhua, with big-eyed characters and bright colours.

How it differs from the donghua

The manhua predates the donghua by ten years and covers far more arcs than the animated series. Its very colourful anime style contrasts with the donghua's more realistic 3D. It follows the novel closely, with a slightly lighter tone. For fans, it is the quickest way to get ahead of the series.

Reception and success

The manhua benefited from the popularity of the first Soul Land and its own manhua, gathering a wide audience among Shen Man readers. Its longevity, with more than 36 volumes, shows its success in China.

My take

A generous, colourful manhua that will delight fans of the first Soul Land manhua. It lacks a little graphic personality, but it tells the story effectively and goes much further than the donghua. I recommend it to anyone who wants to follow Huo Yuhao's adventures ahead of the series.

Who is it for?Soul Land fans who prefer drawings to 3D and want to move faster than the donghua.
