Before the donghua, Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation was a web novel (魔道祖师) by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, one of the most-read authors of the danmei genre. The story develops the investigation and the relationship between the two leads at greater length.

With this novel, MXTX authored one of modern danmei's founding works, alongside Heaven Official's Blessing and Scum Villain's Self-Saving System.
