Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation
ManhuaMo Dao Zu Shi — Luo Di Cheng Qiu's manhua
At a glance13 volumes · completed

Between the novel and the donghua, Mo Dao Zu Shi also got a beautifully crafted comic adaptation. Drawn by Luo Di Cheng Qiu (落地成球), the manhua ran in full colour on the Kuaikan platform from 8 December 2017 to 26 October 2022, over 259 chapters. It tells the whole story, right up to the end of the novel.
Origins and publication
Kuaikan Manhua (快看漫画) is one of China's major vertical-comic platforms, read on smartphones. The Mo Dao Zu Shi manhua was one of its flagship titles, with a steady release schedule for nearly five years. Collected editions followed: 13 volumes in Taiwan from Pingxin starting in 2021, and a mainland edition titled Chi Di Yun Qin Ji (赤笛云琴记, "The Red Flute and the Cloud Zither"), with 5 volumes released.
The adaptation then travelled: Seven Seas has published it in English since 2023, Komogi in French, Tokyopop in German and Mondadori in Italian, alongside Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese and Russian editions.

How it differs from the donghua
The manhua is the most complete version in pictures: where the donghua stops after three seasons and around ten hours, the comic covers the entire novel, epilogue included. Luo Di Cheng Qiu's art is softer and more romantic than the donghua's 2D animation, and the romance is more visible, though not explicit. The full-colour vertical format suits atmospheric scenes well: the mists of Gusu, Lotus Pier, haunted temples.
Reception and success
Fans gave the manhua a warm welcome, praising its faithfulness and the beauty of its pages. It was the way in for many international readers before official translations of the novel came out. The collected editions, often sold with exclusive cards and illustrations, have become collectors' items.
Trivia
- The mainland edition's title, Chi Di Yun Qin Ji, refers to the heroes' two instruments: Wei Wuxian's flute Chenqing and Lan Wangji's guqin zither.
- From the third volume onwards, the Taiwanese edition splits the chapters differently from the mainland edition.
- In France the manhua is published by Komogi as Le Grand Maître de la cultivation démoniaque.
- The Kuaikan serialization lasted almost five years, nearly as long as the production of the donghua's three seasons.
My take
This is the version I most often recommend to people who do not read novels. The colours are superb, the characters are recognisable at a glance and the story goes all the way, which the donghua does not cover in detail. The downside: some investigation passages are condensed and lose a little tension. But for sheer beauty, no other adaptation comes close.
Who is it for?Webtoon and manga readers, and anyone who wants to see the whole story through to the end in pictures.
