The Great Ruler

A young cultivator's journey to becoming one of the masters of the spirit world

Synopsis

Hailing from the Northern Spiritual Realm, young Mu Chen shows extraordinary talent that pushes him to venture into a cultivation world ruled by the law of the strongest, where rival sects and spirit artifacts shape everyone's fate.

Adapted from the novel by Tian Can Tu Dou, also the author of Battle Through the Heavens and Martial Universe, The Great Ruler carries over the author's signature tiered power-growth system into a more cosmic, spiritual xuanhuan setting.

Airing since 2023 on iQIYI, this new 3D animated adaptation follows an earlier 2019 version, with a visually more ambitious production driven by studios Motion Magic and Energy Studio.

World

The world of The Great Ruler is organized around multiple spiritual realms, each home to sects and clans competing for artifacts, ancestral techniques and territory, in a climate of constant rivalry between rising powers and established dynasties.

Power system

Cultivators master ancestral techniques and spirit artifacts, such as the Supreme Spirit Ring coveted by Mu Chen, which become the key to their rise through the spirit world's power stages.

Reception & popularity

The new 3D adaptation launched in 2023 on iQIYI marked a turning point for the franchise, with a more ambitious production than the 2019 version, praised for its spectacular fight scenes and faithfulness to Tian Can Tu Dou's world.

My take

The Great Ruler is worth it mostly for its 2023 3D version, far more spectacular than the first adaptation. The fights are sweeping and easy to follow, doing justice to Tian Can Tu Dou's style.

Story-wise, it sticks to the author's tried-and-tested codes, with few surprises. The bond between Mu Chen and Luo Li does add welcome warmth amid the battles.
