八仙!
All Wishes Come True
Eight mortals, a crazy plan and a divine con that turns into a miracle
Synopsis
Long before becoming the famous Eight Immortals, they were just mortals. As a heavenly catastrophe approaches, Lü Dongbin gathers a band of ordinary people, including Zhongli Quan, Cao Guojiu and Han Xiangzi, around a daring plan.
Pose as immortals to get into the treasure pavilion of Penglai, reserved for the gods, and steal a sacred object. But their deception attracts genuine popular fervour, and with it threats they never anticipated.
Written and directed by Mou Zhengyang and produced in Chengdu by studio Huameng Chengzhen, the film was released in China on 18 July 2026, then internationally in August and September 2026 as All Wishes Come True.
World
The film revisits the legend of the Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea (八仙过海), imagining their lives as mortals. Its Penglai, the island of the immortals, draws on ancient texts such as the Xuanzhong Ji (玄中记) and the blue-green landscapes of classical painting.
Power system
There is no cultivation here: the heroes start with no powers and have to fake everything. The gap between their real weakness and the devotion they inspire drives both the comedy and the emotion of the story.
Reception & popularity
With over 1.85 billion yuan in receipts, the film is China's biggest animated hit of 2026 and enters the all-time top 10 of Chinese animated films. It passed the billion-yuan mark less than two weeks after release.
My take
All Wishes Come True has an irresistible premise: telling the story of the Eight Immortals before they were gods, as a heist film. The tone, somewhere between ensemble comedy and folk tale, is very refreshing.
The film doesn't go for Ne Zha 2's spectacular one-upmanship, and its eight-hero line-up leaves some characters in the background. But its humour and New Year-print-inspired art direction make it a real success.
Who is it for?One to watch with the family, or if you enjoy ensemble comedies and mischievous retellings of Chinese legends.
