Ling Cage: Yue Kui Zhuan — the prequel manhua
At a glance3 volumes
Ling Cage: Yue Kui Zhuan (灵笼·月魁传) is a prequel manhua to the series. It tells Bai Yuekui's life before and during the catastrophe, long before the events of the anime. It has been published on Bilibili Comics since May 2021.
Origins and publication
The manhua is produced by studio Yihua Kaitian itself, supervised by Dong Xiangbo and Chen Wei. It is drawn by Tu Fei from a script by Murong Kaorou. Beijing United Publishing has printed it in volumes since 2022.
How it differs from the donghua
Unlike the anime, which centres on the Lighthouse and the Hunters, the manhua is set before the catastrophe. It shows Bai Yuekui as a brain scientist who, with her mentor Horn, develops a serum called "Angel". It sheds light on several of the series' mysteries.
Reception and success
Fans enjoyed the manhua for the light it sheds on Bai Yuekui, one of the series' most popular characters. Its art, very different from the anime's 3D style, also drew attention.
Trivia
- It is the only published adaptation of Ling Cage to date.
- The first print volume came out in January 2022.
My take
Essential reading for Bai Yuekui fans and for anyone who wants to understand how the catastrophe began. Best read after watching the first season.
Who is it for?For anime viewers who want to know more about the world before the Mana.
— Spidermas, for Donghua Fan
