The Daily Life of the Immortal King — the manhua

Launched on 18 January 2020 on Bilibili Comics, the same day as the donghua, the Xian Wang de Richang Shenghuo manhua ended on 1 April 2023 after 245 chapters. It follows Wang Ling in high school, between gags, secret missions and desperate attempts to keep a low profile.

Origins and publication

Bilibili launched the manhua and the donghua together so viewers could move from one to the other. The manhua is published in colour in vertical format, suited to smartphone reading. It follows the novel's plot with art close to the animation's, which makes switching between the two easy.

How it differs from the donghua

The manhua and the donghua share the same visual style, but the manhua moves faster and covers more arcs than the early animated seasons. The visual gags around Wang Ling's impassiveness are especially effective. The donghua adds music, voices and a sitcom rhythm that strengthen the humour.

Reception and success

Designed as a companion to the donghua, the manhua let viewers continue the story between seasons. It remains an accessible way in for those who do not want to tackle the novel's thousands of chapters.

Trivia

  • The manhua and the donghua launched on the same day, 18 January 2020.
  • The manhua ended on 1 April 2023, after just over three years of publication.
  • It has 245 chapters, all published in colour on Bilibili Comics.
  • Its art uses the donghua's designs for visual continuity between the two.

My take

A light, effective manhua, ideal for extending the donghua between seasons. The humour works well in comic form and the story moves at a good pace. It lacks the novel's ambition, but that is not what anyone asks of it. I recommend it to fans of the animated series.

Who is it for?Donghua fans who want to know what happens next, and readers of comedy webtoons.
