The Legend of Luo Xiaohei — the Lanxi Zhen manhua

The Luo Xiaohei universe was extended by Lanxi Zhen (蓝溪镇, "Blue Stream Town"), a spin-off manhua also titled Luo Xiaohei Zhanji: Jun Qing Pian. Drawn by Sun Gua (孙呱) from MTJJ's work, it was published from 5 May 2019 to 18 February 2026 over 139 chapters and has 5 collected volumes in China.

Origins and publication

Rather than following Xiaohei, the manhua goes back in time to tell of a war era and the youth of three major figures in the universe: Laojun, Qingning and Xuanli. In every troubled period, Laojun travels the land and takes in those who have lost their homes. They live under his protection in a refuge village, free to leave or stay once peace returns. That place is called Lanxi Zhen.

How it differs from the donghua

The manhua adapts neither the films nor the web series: it is an original story that sheds light on the bonds and rivalries behind the films' situation. Its tone is more melancholy and calmer, with soft, pastel-coloured art. The films, by contrast, focus on action and adventure.

Reception and success

The manhua was very well received, with a 7.2 rating on Bangumi, and is appreciated for its gentleness and melancholy. Completed in 2026, it is the ideal complement for fans who want to understand the mythology of the Hall and the great spirits beyond what the episodes and films show.

Trivia

  • The alternative title, Jun Qing Pian, combines the names of Laojun and Qingning.
  • The artist Sun Gua's real name is Li Le.
  • The Chinese collected volumes have been published by Jiangsu Phoenix Literature and Art since 2020.
  • The manhua ran for almost seven years, from 2019 to 2026.

My take

Lanxi Zhen is a little gem of gentleness, very different from the films' energy. It reveals the past of characters we only glimpsed, and the refuge village's atmosphere is very soothing. The pace is slow, and it is better to know the universe a little before diving in. But for fans, it is essential reading.

Who is it for?Luo Xiaohei fans who want to learn the universe's past, and lovers of gentle, melancholy stories.
