At a glance2,021 chapters · completed

Slay the Gods adapts Wo Zai Jingshen Bingyuan Xue Zhan Shen (我在精神病院学斩神), "I Learn to Slay Gods in a Psychiatric Hospital", San Jiu Yin Yu's (三九音域) novel serialized on the Fanqie platform from 9 July 2021 to 9 June 2023. In a modern China where monsters from myth hide beneath the neon lights, Lin Qiye discovers that his mind houses an asylum in which gods are locked up.
Origins and publication
The novel mixes urban fantasy with mythologies from around the world. Its heroes face creatures and deities from myths around the world, from the archangel Michael to the Greek gods, while one question runs in the background: where have the gods of Da Xia, the novel's China, gone? Lin Qiye joins the Night Watchmen (守夜人), a secret organisation that protects humans, and forms a team with companions whose powers differ widely. The tone alternates humour, action and heroic scenes that readers love.
The novel, which runs to over 2,000 chapters, was published in print as Ye Mu Zhi Xia (夜幕之下, "Under the Night"), in 12 volumes from Beijing United Publishing and Motie, starting in 2023.

How it differs from the donghua
Shenman Culture's donghua, launched in July 2024 on Tencent Video, adapts Lin Qiye's beginnings in Cangnan and the formation of his team. It stays faithful to the plot and takes special care over the action scenes. The novel goes further into the gods locked in Lin Qiye's asylum, their personalities and histories, and into the team's everyday life, full of humour. It also goes much further, all the way to wars against entire pantheons.
Reception and success
Slay the Gods is one of the biggest hits on Fanqie, ByteDance's free reading platform, and proved that a novel born on a free platform could become a major franchise. Readers love its original concept and epic scenes. Some criticise a sometimes simple style and an ending they found rushed.
Trivia
- The print edition's title, Ye Mu Zhi Xia, means "under the night", a reference to the Night Watchmen.
- The novel features figures such as the archangel Michael, Hades and Poseidon.
- Da Xia (大夏), the name for China in the novel, refers to an ancient name for the country.
- The novel was published on Fanqie, a free, ad-supported reading platform.
My take
Slay the Gods is a very effective novel that knows how to stage moments of bravery. The asylum of gods concept is brilliant, and Lin Qiye's team is endearing. The style is simple and the second half gets a little carried away. But for urban fantasy steeped in mythology, it is one of the best recent choices.
