Power system
The power levels of Renegade Immortal
Renegade Immortal divides cultivation into three great steps. The first resembles other xianxia; the second requires understanding the cycle of life and death; the third is reached only by a handful of beings. Wang Lin goes through them all.
The first step
- 1Qi Condensation凝气níng qì
The first stage, where Wang Lin, judged talentless, barely makes it into the Heng Yue Sect.
- 2Foundation Establishment筑基zhù jī
Qi stabilises. A cultivator of this rank is already an important disciple.
- 3Core Formation结丹jié dān
Qi crystallises into a core. Wang Lin gains the strength to avenge his family.
- 4Nascent Soul元婴yuán yīng
The core becomes a small soul that can leave the body. This is the rank of sect patriarchs.
- 5Soul Formation化神huà shén
The nascent soul merges with the cultivator, who begins to perceive the laws of the world.
- 6Soul Transformation婴变yīng biàn
The cultivator transforms their soul and prepares to enter the higher realms.
- 7Ascendant问鼎wèn dǐng
The peak of the first step: the cultivator must break through to the second step or die of old age.
The second step
- 8Illusory Yin阴虚yīn xū
The first rank of the second step. The cultivator understands the yin, immaterial side of their own existence.
- 9Corporeal Yang阳实yáng shí
After yin comes yang: the cultivator gives a real form to their understanding.
- 10Nirvana Scryer窥涅kuī niè
The cultivator glimpses nirvana, the cycle of death and rebirth.
- 11Nirvana Cleanser净涅jìng niè
They purify their soul through this cycle and draw closer to it.
- 12Nirvana Shatterer碎涅suì niè
The peak of the second step: shattering nirvana to break free of it and prepare for the third step.
The third step
- 13The third step第三步dì sān bù
After a terrible tribulation, the cultivator enters realms that only a few beings in the universe reach. The novel describes several ranks there, each rarer than the last.
- 14Heaven Trampling踏天tà tiān
The peak of all cultivation in Renegade Immortal, beyond the third step. It is the culmination of Wang Lin's journey.
How to advance
Wang Lin advances mainly through tenacity, the Heaven Defying Bead and his genius for restrictions, a kind of magical trap and seal. The novel focuses less on raw levels than on understanding laws: karma, life and death, true and false.
In the donghua
The donghua, launched in 2023, covers the first step of Wang Lin's cultivation and keeps the Chinese names of the stages.
