Renegade Immortal — the films Battle of the Gods and Shi Xian Zhi Zhan
At a glance2 films
The Renegade Immortal donghua is not limited to weekly episodes. On 30 May 2025 Tencent Video released a first feature, Battle of the Gods (仙逆剧场版：神临之战), followed on 1 October 2026 by a second film, Shi Xian Zhi Zhan (弑仙之战).
Production and behind the scenes
These films are part of a Tencent strategy: offering long special episodes, released as events on its platform, between seasons of its flagship series. Battle of the Gods was produced by the series' own team, Build Dream Animation, with improved rendering and effects designed to create a naked-eye 3D impression. Before release, more than 3.8 million users had reserved it.
How it differs from the donghua
The films are not recaps: they adapt specific arcs of the novel with more resources than regular episodes. The long format allows the big battles to be polished and key moments to breathe. In return, they are aimed first at viewers already following the series, as they assume you know Wang Lin and his past.
Reception and success
Fans welcomed Battle of the Gods, praising its visuals and the intensity of its fights. Its script earned the team an outstanding animation screenwriter award at Tencent Video's annual ceremony. The films' success confirms Renegade Immortal as one of the strongest franchises in today's donghua.
Trivia
- Shi Zekun voices Wang Lin and Zhang Huilin voices Li Muwan in Battle of the Gods.
- In 2024 the donghua switched to year-round continuous broadcasting, a rare format for a 3D series.
- In spring 2025 the series reached a 15.4% share of China's animation market.
- Several episodes of the series have passed 100 million views.
My take
I really like these films, as long as you see them as deluxe episodes. Battle of the Gods' animation is a notch above the series, and some scenes give real chills. But you need to know the story to enjoy them, and they do not stand on their own. For a Wang Lin fan, it is an event not to be missed.
Who is it for?Viewers already following the series who want the novel's big moments with more resources.
