A Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality adapts Fanren Xiuxian Zhuan (凡人修仙传), Wang Yu's (忘语) novel serialized on Qidian from 30 March 2007 to 23 September 2013. Across 2,446 chapters it follows Han Li, a village boy with no special talent who joins a small martial school, the Seven Mysteries (七玄门), and survives the ruthless world of cultivators thanks to his caution and a mysterious little green bottle.
Origins and publication
The novel ran against the prodigy heroes of its time. Han Li has no exceptional gift and no written destiny, and his main quality is knowing how to flee, hide and calculate. This realism made such an impression on readers that it gave its name to a subgenre: "fanren liu" (凡人流), the story of the "mortal" who rises through caution. The green bottle, which can speed up the growth of medicinal herbs, has become one of the most famous objects in Chinese online fiction.
The novel was published in 24 volumes by Taibai Wenyi, then reissued in 2025 in a revised 15-volume edition. Wang Yu later wrote a sequel, Fanren Xiuxian zhi Xianjie Pian (凡人修仙之仙界篇), following Han Li into the immortal world.

How it differs from the donghua
Original Force's donghua, launched in July 2020 on Bilibili, is known for its faithfulness. It keeps the realistic tone, Han Li's caution and the deliberately slow progression. The novel still goes further in detail: resource management, Han Li's calculations before each fight and the many side characters who appear and vanish. The animation gives a little more room to female characters such as Nangong Wan, whom the novel often leaves in the background.
Reception and success
Fanren Xiuxian Zhuan is one of the most influential cultivation novels ever published. It dominated Qidian's rankings for years and remains an absolute benchmark of xianxia. The Bilibili donghua, one of the platform's most popular, and the 2025 drama starring Yang Yang introduced Han Li to a huge audience.
Trivia
- The pen name Wang Yu (忘语) roughly means "forgotten words".
- Fans affectionately call Han Li "Han Lao Mo" (韩老魔, Old Devil Han) because of his legendary distrust.
- In 2025 a 30-episode live-action series starring Yang Yang as Han Li aired on Youku and Netflix.
- Han Li is no genius: his talent is described as a "false spiritual root" (伪灵根), one of the most mediocre there is.
My take
If I had to recommend just one classic cultivation novel, it would be this one. Han Li is a unique hero, pragmatic, careful and sometimes unscrupulous, and it is a joy to watch him outwit stronger enemies through cunning. The novel is long, very long, and some arcs feel alike. But it has a consistency and credibility rare in the genre.
Who is it for?Readers tired of invincible heroes, and anyone who wants to understand what classic xianxia is.
