The power levels of Battle Through the Heavens
In Battle Through the Heavens, everything rests on Dou Qi, the energy of combat. Fighters climb eleven ranks, each divided into stars, from simple apprentice to the legendary Dou Di, which no one has reached for centuries.
The ranks, from weakest to strongest
- 1Dou Zhi Qi斗之气dòu zhī qì
The apprentice stage, counted in levels (段). At the start of the story, Xiao Yan has fallen back to it, hence his clan's contempt.
- 2Dou Zhe斗者dòu zhě
The fighter forms a vortex of Dou Qi in their body and can use it in combat.
- 3Dou Shi斗师dòu shī
Dou Qi can leave the body as armour. This is the level of the young talents of the great clans.
- 4Da Dou Shi大斗师dà dòu shī
The great fighter strengthens their Dou Qi armour and masters more advanced techniques.
- 5Dou Ling斗灵dòu líng
Dou Qi can take the shape of objects or weapons. A Dou Ling is respected throughout a kingdom.
- 6Dou Wang斗王dòu wáng
Dou Qi forms wings that allow flight. It is a major turning point in combat.
- 7Dou Huang斗皇dòu huáng
A Dou Huang dominates small kingdoms like the Jia Ma Empire, where there are only a handful of them.
- 8Dou Zong斗宗dòu zōng
A Dou Zong can bend the space around them. They can found or lead a great power.
- 9Dou Zun斗尊dòu zūn
Dou Zun dominate the central regions of the continent, where the second half of the story takes place.
- 10Dou Sheng斗圣dòu shèng
The saints of Dou Qi are almost mythical powers, capable of levelling mountains.
- 11Dou Di斗帝dòu dì
The Emperor of Dou Qi, the absolute peak of cultivation. The last one lived centuries ago, and it is the rank Xiao Yan aims for.
How to advance
Fighters build up Dou Qi through meditation and cultivation techniques, which are ranked (Huang, Xuan, Di, Tian). Heavenly flames, like the one Xiao Yan hunts, and alchemy pills speed up their progress. An alchemist is therefore as powerful as a warrior.
In the donghua
The donghua keeps the Chinese names of the ranks. The yearly series follow Xiao Yan towards the higher ranks as he leaves the Jia Ma Empire for the central regions.
