Battle Through the Heavens — the Fights Break Sphere drama
At a glanceover 40 episodes

Battle Through the Heavens went live-action in 2018 with Fights Break Sphere (斗破苍穹), broadcast on Hunan TV from 3 September to 25 October 2018. Leo Wu (Wu Lei), a young Chinese film star, plays Xiao Yan alongside Lin Yun, Li Qin, Baron Chen, Xin Zhilei and Liu Meitong.
Production and behind the scenes
The series was directed by Yu Rongguang, a veteran martial arts actor and choreographer of Hong Kong cinema, from a script by Zhang Ting. Casting Leo Wu, then barely an adult, was meant to attract a young audience. The production bet on sets and choreographed fights, mixing wirework and CGI.
The franchise later had other live-action versions: a new series in 2023, Doupo Cangqiong zhi Shaonian Guilai ("The Return of the Young Man"), and a film, Doupo Cangqiong: Juexing ("Awakening"), released on 17 November 2023.
How it differs from the donghua
Fights Break Sphere takes great liberties with the novel. The script invents subplots, reorders arcs and develops side characters to fill the episodes. Xiao Yan comes across sooner as a confident hero, and the romance with Xun'er is foregrounded. The donghua, launched a year earlier, is far more faithful, which made the comparison unfavourable for the drama.
Reception and success
The series benefited from Hunan TV's reach and Leo Wu's popularity, with strong streaming numbers. Fans of the novel, however, sharply criticised the plot changes. It remains an important step in the wave of web novel adaptations of the late 2010s.
Trivia
- Director Yu Rongguang acted in action films such as Iron Monkey (1993).
- Leo Wu was already famous in China for his child roles, notably in the series Nirvana in Fire.
- The series was distributed internationally as Fights Break Sphere, notably on Viki.
- The 2023 film, Doupo Cangqiong: Juexing, has a new cast unrelated to the 2018 series.
My take
Fights Break Sphere is an enjoyable drama if you forget the novel, but frustrating if you know it. Leo Wu is convincing and the fights have rhythm, but the script additions dilute what makes Xiao Yan so effective. To discover the story, the donghua remains far better. Watch this drama for its cast and out of curiosity.
Who is it for?Leo Wu fans and lovers of Chinese fantasy dramas rather than readers of the novel.
